Back to Preface of Vaksdal Bygdebok [Farestveit is one of the farms in the county of Modalen, located just north of Vaksdal, but much more remote. It is hemmed in by tall mountains everywhere except a narrow strip that borders on the Mo Fjord. The following is a section from the Modalen Bygdebok. Until 1979 Modalen could be reached only by boat, or on foot by crossing the mountain dividing it from Vaksdal on the south. The over the mountain trek would take about 2-3 hours according to Jostein Otterstad who remembered doing it as a child. In 1979 the government completed a 2.3 km tunnel under the mountain and now it is accessible by automobile.]
Farestveit Bruk 5 1691: There are now 5 users in Farestveit, compared with 4 in 1667. It is probably the farm where Knut lived in 1667, now in two parts, BNR. 5 [bruk number 5] and BNR. 7. Hans lives at BNR. 7 and brother Knut Gulleiksen lives at BNR. 5. He uses dark 18. butter in 1694 and ford in 1701 and in the census of 1711. [dark and ford are apparently some measurements for butter production and this seems to be the measure of how profitable or productive a farm is.]

1720: Lease from Erich Møinichen to Sjur Gulleikson of 12 dark. sm. 2 v. fists [untranslated, but probably some portion of the farm]. It is a renewal lease, so he must have been on the farm before this time. He is on the farm only a short time, for in 1723 there is a new registered user. It seems reasonable that Sjur was the brother of Knut, but we do not know it with certainty. We do not know who his wife was, but they have two children baptised in Farestveit. We find no burials, either for Sjur or his wife, so it appears they moved from the area. 2 Sjur Gulleikson Farestveit, m.
